Project Overview
Artist duo Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero bring us this light sculpture in the breezeway of a newly constructed 50 story tower in downtown Chicago designed by architectural firm Goettsch Partners. Composed of more than 1,000 individual programable LED lighting nodes, Arboreta beckons those navigating the city’s streetscape to the respite of a beautiful and relaxing green space. Moving images of wind blowing through leaves, clouds in the sky, and sunlight filtering through foliage animate the sculpture to further enhance its geometry, reminiscent of tree branches. The two assemblies sprawl through an arial space spanning 30′ by 150′.
RGB Lights specified the low-voltage, maintenance friendly lighting system featuring remote drivers up to 100 feet from the LEDs they service. All LED components were to be installed and tested in sections prior to final deployment and field installation. Design of the LED housings and the large, textured acrylic lenses happened in conjunction with the specification of the LED components and all necessary component tolerances including connector size and functionality, and LED to lens setback distance. The white finish of all components within the system were to match the overhead, monolithic ceiling.
The system was raised into place in sections with RGB Lights on-site to make final connection points in the air.
